Help Choosing the Right Topcoat

This clear topcoat is the finishing layer of a compatible coating system. It adds protection while leaving the base color visible.

Check the instructions and contents of your base-coat kit first. A topcoat may already be included, or your coating may not call for an extra layer. Do not assume every DWIL paint needs this product. Check my base coat before ordering if you are unsure.

Use over a compatible base coat, rather than directly on a bare surface. The complete coating system must suit both your surface and how you use it.

To check a match, send us the base-coat product name or label, your surface, where it will be used and when the base coat was applied. Tile, wood, laminate, concrete, vinyl and linoleum are listed project surfaces; that does not mean every coating already on them is compatible.

Ask us about your project.

The clear layer leaves the color underneath visible, but can change its sheen and how it looks in the light. Test a small area over your actual base coat and allow it to cure before deciding on the full project.

Check the result in your usual lighting, especially on white or dark finishes. Do not use a clear topcoat to hide an uneven color or defects in the base coat.

Make sure the base coat is ready for topcoating within its specified recoat window. The surface must be clean and free of dust, grease and other contaminants; follow the coating-system instructions for any sanding.

Mix the topcoat and its supplied hardener according to the kit instructions. Follow the stated proportions, working time, coat count and recoat intervals for this product. Test the complete system in a small area before coating the full surface.

Measure the area to be topcoated and confirm this kit's coverage and coat requirement before choosing quantity. Do not use the base paint's coverage to calculate topcoat quantity.

Plan for both the base coat and topcoat stages. Follow the product instructions before water exposure, walking, cleaning or regular use; a dry-to-touch surface can still be curing. Ask us about your project for help matching the kit to your area and schedule.

Protect the newly coated surface from water, wear and cleaning until it has cured as directed. After curing, use the cleaning method recommended for the complete coating system and avoid abrasive scrubbing.

A protective topcoat does not repair leaks or damaged surfaces. For wet floors, confirm that the complete system is suitable for the location and its slip-resistance requirements before applying.
