When it comes to achieving a flawless paint finish, preparation is everything. Whether you're refreshing a bathtub, transforming your tiles, or renovating old furniture, the success of your project hinges on how well you treat the surface before applying paint. At DWIL, we understand that surface treatment isn’t just an extra step—it’s an essential process that ensures durability, adhesion, and the quality of your finished look.
So, why is surface treatment so important?
1、Ensures Proper AdhesionOne of the primary reasons for surface preparation is to ensure that the paint properly adheres to the material you're working on. Over time, surfaces can accumulate dirt, grease, mildew, or old paint layers that can prevent new paint from sticking effectively. Without adequate preparation, even the best-quality paint can peel or chip prematurely. Proper surface cleaning and priming allow for stronger adhesion, providing a smooth and long-lasting finish.
2、Use Specialized Cleaners
We creatively provide a cleaner that can fully clean the surface of tiles. Pour the cleaner on all dirty surface areas or directly on floor and apply evenly with a sponge wipe, ensuring surface is damp. After 15-20 minutes, brush it again.
Applying alkaline cleaner on the surface of the tile and letting it stand for 20 minutes can make the surface of the tile rough. After 20 minutes, rinse with water and dry. Mop area thoroughly, Repeat as necessary.
How to check whether the surface of the tile is rough? After wiping the tile dry, touch the surface of the tile with your hand. If the surface feels dry, the tile is well treated. If it still feels smooth, you need to use a cleaner to treat it again.
3、Creates a Smooth Canvas
Paint will highlight any imperfections on a surface, including cracks, dents, or rough patches. Sanding down uneven areas and filling in gaps ensures that your paint job looks polished and professional. Whether you're painting over tiles, wood, or metal, a smooth, well-prepped surface leads to a beautiful, even finish that elevates the entire space.
4、Increases Durability
Proper surface treatment isn’t just about aesthetics; it also affects the longevity of the paint job. For high-traffic areas like bathrooms or kitchens, or surfaces prone to moisture (such as tubs and tiles), ensuring that your surface is treated and primed can make your paint more resistant to wear and tear. This extra step can save you time and money in the long run by preventing the need for frequent touch-ups or repainting.
5、Helps Prevent Moisture Issues
In areas like bathrooms, moisture is an inevitable challenge. If the surface isn't properly treated, water can seep through cracks or unprimed areas, causing mold, mildew, or paint bubbling. Treating the surface with appropriate cleaners and primers helps create a moisture barrier that keeps your paint looking fresh and prevents future problems.
6、Enhances Paint Performance
Every type of paint performs better on a prepared surface. At DWIL, our tub and tile paints are formulated to provide excellent coverage and durability, but even the best paint won’t live up to its potential on a poorly prepped surface. A properly cleaned and treated surface ensures that the paint goes on smoothly and evenly, enhancing its performance and maximizing the beauty of your finished project.
Key Steps in Surface Treatment
Now that we’ve highlighted why surface treatment is critical, let’s go over the basic steps to ensure your surface is paint-ready:
Clean: Use an appropriate cleaner to remove dirt, grease, and mildew.
Repair: Fill in any cracks or gaps and sand uneven areas to create a smooth surface.
Prime: For certain surfaces, a primer is essential for proper adhesion and protection, especially for materials like tile, metal, or wood.
Let it Dry: Allow your surface to fully dry before applying paint. This is especially important for areas exposed to moisture, such as bathrooms.
By taking the time to properly treat your surfaces, you'll not only achieve a more professional-looking result but also extend the life and durability of your paint job. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or just starting your first home renovation project, surface preparation is key to ensuring that the time and effort you put into painting will pay off for years to come.
Conclusion At DWIL, we're passionate about helping you achieve stunning, long-lasting results in your home renovation projects. Our range of high-quality, eco-friendly tub and tile refinishing kits are designed to pair perfectly with thorough surface treatment, giving you the best chance for a flawless finish. So, remember—before you pick up the paintbrush, make sure your surface is ready to shine!

I just left a message with the phone # listed. I will be painting my mother’s tub that has not been painted before along with the 3 sides of tile above that has been painted about 35 years ago. The painted tile surface is not powdery, it is not pealing or washed out or uneven. I have no idea what kind of paint was applied to the tile originally. I need to know what you recommend to be sure the application will work well and the results of the painting will look professional and be suitable to viewers/buyer willing to purchase the home. I have quite an investment as I was told to purchase 3 cans which came to $300.00 plus my time. Please advise.
Also since I have 3 cans question?
Should I pour 1 and a half container into a larger container and mix 1 and a half of the hardener for the first application / 1st coat then mix up the rest of the paint with the hardener for the 2nd application/2nd coat?
Please advise.
Thank you,
